The St Petersburg Democratic Club will host a debate May 7 featuring the three Democrats seeking our party's nomination for Florida's District 10 Congressional seat, currently held by Republican Bill Young who is seeking a 20th term. The debate will be held at the club's regular monthly meeting, first Wednesday of the month, at Piccadilly Cafeteria, 1900 34th Street North (US-19) in St Petersburg, at 7:00pm. The debate is open to the public.
The candidates are: Dunedin Mayor Bob Hackworth, a former Republican who switched parties to run as a Democrat; Max Linn, the Reform Party candidate for governor in 2006 who has also switched to become a Democrat; and Samm Simpson, a progressive activist who was the Democratic nominee for Congressional District 10 in 2006.

From Friday, April 25th through Thursday, May 1, the St. Petersburg Beach Theater present the Academy Award winning documentary film by Alex Gibney, "Taxi to the Darkside."
This movie is a shocking indictment of the Bush administration's use of torture. The title of Gibney's movie is derived from the treatment meted out to an Afghani taxi driver named Dilawar, who was mistakenly fingered as a terrorist, then killed during a torture session conducted by American troops. The director uses excruciating details surrounding the taxi driver's death as a starting point in his search for the people who have permitted such incidents to occur. We encourage our supporters to support the courage of the Beach Theater's owners, Liz and Mike Frantz, as they bring the truth to the screen. Ms. Wright resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service on March 19, 2003, while serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Mongolia, in protest of the war in Iraq and unnecessary curtailment of civil liberties. She has been on the front lines of lawful dissent and protest ever since. She helped organize Camp Casey and travels the country speaking truth to power.. You may remember that Ann found out she was on a "terror list" when she tried to cross in to Canada for a Code Pink Conference and she wasn't allowed in.
Ann has written a new book, Dissent: Voice of Conscience ( Koa Books, January 2008) This book profiles government officials whose loyalty to the Constitution Constitution and the American people ultimately transcended partisan politics. Originally scheduled for release in 2007, publication has been delayed until now by the State Department’s clearance process. Books will be available for purchase and author signing.

Rise Up! The System is Broken Unity Rally! That will be the rallying cry from 2:00 – 10 P.M. on Wednesday, November 28 at Pioneer Park - located at One Beach Drive South East St. Petersburg - where hundreds of like-minded Floridians will set aside political differences and peacefully assemble in a non=partisan manner to protest an unresponsive Congress and an out of control Presidency.
The day’s festivities include voter registration, a Presidential straw poll where every candidate counts, abundant networking and education opportunities and a Press Conference staring at 5:00 P.M.
The Unity March begins at 6:30, just before the CNN cameras start to roll inside the Mahaffey Theater, the site of the St. Petersburg Republican Presidential Debate. Concerned Florida citizens will take their “Rise Up! The System is Broken!” signs and proceed to an approved location outside the theater.

Mr. Yee served at Guantanamo before he was wrongly accused of treason and spent 76 days in solitary confinement. He believes his Muslim faith triggered his arrest.

Veterans For Peace School Board Workshop

Tampa Bay Veterans for Peace (TBVFP) and their supporters have worked for access to provide information on the military at local high schools so students and parents can make informed decisions about military careers. Since the administration has refused to permit TBVFP to give students information, TBVFP has brought the matter before the Pinellas County School Board.
The School Board has scheduled a workshop to address student access for TBVFP on Thursday, July 13, 10:15 AM in the third floor conference room of the Pinellas County School Board Building, 301 Fourth St. SW in Largo. TBVFP asks all who support their work to attend. It will be a vital demonstration of community support, even though attendees will not be able to speak. A new half hour program of Media Is Propaganda will be airing in June. It features segments from a presentation by a female Iraqi pharmacist, Dr. Entisar Mohammad Ariabi, who was part of the Code Pink delegation traveling throughout the United States last spring.
Dr. Ariabi spoke at the Enoch Davis Center in St. Petersburg. Thank you to Rae Abileah from Code Pink who allowed me to videotape the proceedings.
The show runs three times a week on Knology Channel 21 and Bright House Channel 96 in Pinellas County. Pass the word.
