Samm Simpson's Rebuttal to the
St. Petersburg Times
I likewise honor Congressman Young for his long service and funding for local projects. But at what cost? Calling Young "independent" is a misnomer. He agreed with Bush?s stem cell veto and votes with the GOP 94% of the time. As Chairman of the Appropriations Committee Mr. Young had supreme oversight responsibility, yet soldiers received Vietnam era flak jackets and unarmored Humvees. Where is the $9.3 billion "lost" by Bremer's CPA? Why did most Halliburton water plants contain malaria and typhus? Congressman Waxman reports 118 federal contracts shave wasted $745 billion. Young has not sought to examine this outrageous abuse. Why? Young also signed the Military Commission Act, which emasculates habeas corpus; making any U.S. Citizen vulnerable to seizure with no right of appeal. Our nation is in crisis. Federal debt is unsustainable, employer immigration enforcement ignored, borders and ports unsecured. Millions need health care. Veterans need streamlined claims. Seniors need affordable drugs and housing. We need an alternative energy revolution and revitalized public education. It will take tortuous baby steps to extricate ourselves from the quagmire of debt, damage and international shame, but it can be done. We need new leadership willing to admit mistakes, for our children's sake.
